Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Q & A
What Is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Ketamine has been used safely in medicine as an anesthetic for over half a century. In recent years, research suggests that it can help reset brain pathways involved in mood and emotion. Many have referred to Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) as psychedelic therapy, but it is more than that. When used in a controlled, therapeutic setting, like our clinic, ketamine can support emotional processing, reduce rumination, and increase a sense of openness and connection.
While research shows that Ketamine can effectively relieve symptoms without psychotherapeutic support, integrative therapy can help patients process difficult emotions and make behavioral modifications to achieve lasting, positive change. KAP combines the scientific value of ketamine therapy with proven psychotherapy.
At Palo Alto Mind Body, Ketamine treatments are not a quick fix or a standalone medication. It’s a collaborative therapeutic process.
Who Can Benefit?
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may be helpful for individuals who live with:
- Depression, including Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD, TR-MDD)
- Post-Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Emotional numbness or disconnection
- Suicidal thoughts or behaviors (Suicidal Ideation, SI)
Many people find their way to us after other treatments haven’t brought the relief they hoped for. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy offers a new approach, one that can open the door to more profound emotional healing and lasting change.
What to Expect?
Your ketamine treatment journey begins with a comprehensive consultation to understand your history, goals, and current challenges. If ketamine-assisted psychotherapy feels like the right fit, we’ll design a plan tailored to your needs. Each session takes place in our calm, tranquil office, so you can relax and feel supported.
Every ketamine and esketamine (Spravato) session at PAMB consists of a process we’ve named Psychotherapy-Augmented Ketamine Treatment (PAKT); that is, using psychotherapy to enhance the evidence-based administration of medically-necessary ketamine. At each appointment, you will have the opportunity to engage in supportive psychotherapy with the trained mental health provider who administers your medication. Other therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy may also be utilized. This is ketamine psychotherapy at your own pace, to help you get more out of the treatment. Some patients choose to talk for a full hour, while others may only want to do a brief check-in before starting the medication. We meet you where you are and encourage your healing and growth.
As the official ketamine-assisted psychotherapy training site for the Stanford – Palo Alto University PsyD Consortium, we also offer a more traditional KAP option. During these sessions, a therapist helps guide the experience, integrate insights, and connect what emerges to your personal growth and healing goals. After the initial appointment, integration sessions can help translate your insights into real-world change so you can get the most out of the treatment.
Both PAKT and KAP can be extremely effective at treating your symptoms. You and your care team will discuss which option best suits your needs.
